Right? I killed a Jackal, he dropped boots, I put them on, they were cursed, I fell down stairs to level 2. Nethack is such a cruel mistress. So far my best is about 5000 points.

I'm getting around 12,000-15,000 consistently, playing Elvish rangers now. My trick is to do the first few levels of the Gnomish Mines when I find them, and put off going all the way to Minetown until I reach the Oracle.
At that point, you get to find out the blessed/uncursed/cursed status of everything you've grabbed, and you can start reading scrolls. Occasionally, you destroy your armor that way, but that's usually not such a big deal at that point.
Also, my current may-never-finish personal project is porting Nethack to Java, and then to Android.

HOLY CRAP! I've never heard anyone have that level of detailed strategy! I'll have to give that a try.
How's the Android app coming? I built a little Android hello, world app just to check out the platform, seems pretty good. Everything I've heard about the G1 is not good though so I'll probably wait to get an Android phone.
